A couple of gold nuggets, one retro...

Post by Norberto Rivera »

While reading various FB posts on the VATSIM page I came across a couple of things. First, a freeware flight logging software package that overlays your flight path over Google Earth. It's called Blackbox Flight Logger and you can find it here. It works with FS9, FSX, X-Plane. It has a T-CAS that can display AI, VATSIM and IVAO traffic, as well as overlay it on your Google Earth view, and it logs flight data in real time. The shot below shows the data you can pull from each point along a route.

The second gold nugget might please some of you retro inclined folks. It's a BAE Jetstream-31 from VirtualCol Software. It's payware, but it's only $10.50. It comes with quite a few liveries, including American Connection (circa 1988) and American Eagle (circa 1992). It doesn't have very many bells and whistles or eye candy, but it's worth every penny and it is a joy to fly. I fully intend on getting their ATR-42 and the Dornier 328 as well.

It comes with a 2-D panel and a VC. I have the FS9 version as I'm still stuck in 2004 and I'm having a blast.

A closer look at the VC shows that it's not the greatest, but it's pretty good... especially for the price. For those of you who want to check it out, you can find it here.

The VirtualCol guys have 10 aircraft flavors available, all but one for $10.50 each.

For FSX/Prepar3d: ATR-72, ATR-42, Dornier 328 Jet, Dornier 328-110, Fokker 50 and the JetStream 31.

For FS2004: ATR-72, ATR-42, Dornier 328-110, JS-31 and an E-Jets collection.

They also have a Cessna T303 that works in either sim for $9.50 and a variety of sceneries.

For the record: I am in no way affiliated with this group and make no warranties, express or implied, as to the suitability of these products or their fitness for merchant-ability. Your rights may vary from state to state.

On a serious note for the training folks, this software generates a google earth file that was about 800 Kb after a trip around Puerto Rico with a couple of touch and go's, a tower buzz and a full ILS approach. It appears to have most of the necessary flight data for a checkride with the exception of the fixes, navaids and airways. Maybe that is something that could be overlaid on the back end??? Might be worth looking into...
