Wayne, sometimes it will let one realign the NAV function on the IRS if you have it set for fast auto align on the main pro panel. But mostly you need to be still somewhere on the ground, of course. I have had it realign while flying but it seems to be a hit or miss option.
If your FSX crashes more than not, have you put the UIAutomationcore.dll in your FSX root directory. This seems to be a fix for FSX crashes when switching panels while in operation. There is a forum discussion about this in the not to distant past here.

Good luck with that! Let us know if you happen upon a solution. I, for one, still fly FS9. I have a Studio XPS with an i7 processor and 4Gb of RAM, etc, and FSX still stutters running medium settings. FS9, on the other hand, rarely even blinks running with sliders maxed out.
