FS9 Won't Start

Hi All,

Long time no see. I have been quite sporadic with my flight sim activity but still manage to get a few flights in a month. Recently, however, I have run into quite a problem. FS9 has not been loading. When I click the "Microsoft Flight Simulator 9" icon, nothing happens. No splash screen. No computer "buzz". Nothing. I have never had this problem occur before.

Some background on my system:
-Intel (R) Core (TM) i5 CPU
-3.33 GHz
-8 GB RAM
-64 Bit Operating system
-Windows 7
-GeForce GTX 560 NVIDIA Driver 337.88

Some background on remedies I have tried:
-I have gone through all (10) remedies on Microsoft's troubleshooting of the issue here, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/837195, to no avail.
-I have tried deleting the FS9.CFG file and restarting FS9 with no luck.
-I have updated DirectX and my video card drivers.
-I have tried starting FS9 as an administrator and "normal" user.
-I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling FS9.

To top it all off, FSX starts up just fine. I never really transferred over to FSX on its release, however, and still have all of my payware addons on FS9. I am starting to get frustrated trying to figure out this conundrum. I have used FS9 on this system for the last 6+ years, and another 6+ years on a previous system and have never encountered such a problem.

Has anyone else experienced this same issue? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Greg 8)

Have you checked your event log to try and narrow down what's crashing?

I had the same problem a week or two ago. MS pushed the usual updates around middle of September. One of those updates is the culprit, for FS9 users only. You can perform a Windows Restore to get you up and going. Which update? Try jumping on flightsim.com in the forums section for further help. Something happened that won't allow "older games" to work.
Or do a search for KB3086255, this is the security patch that your computer probably automatically downloaded and installed.
I tried everything (administrator rights/no admin rights), although with no admin rights a window popped up saying I needed to log on with admin rights.
Look for this KB 3086255 in your Windows update section and try to uninstall it. That should work

Bert,
I had not looked in the event log, but I think what Pete wrote nailed the issue on the head.

Pete,
I tried following the steps to resolve the issue, and I made some headway. I now at least get a splash screen when I start, but then my screen goes dark and then back to the desktop. Have you had success with the workaround?

Truth be told, I have done a lot of research on Prepar3d recently and just saw V3 was released a few days ago. After a long time with FS9, it may be time to upgrade.

You may also want to look at FSX Steam. I've heard some good things about it and it is probably cheaper than P3D (especially v3).

Hi Greg. Cheers
After a while without browsing the page I've run into this post. I do not know if you have already solved the problem with starting the FS9.
We do not lose another attempt. Please follow the steps below stand:
1.-Make a backup of the original fs9.exe (FS9 9.0.0.30612) located in the root folder of the simulator.
2. Put it another fs9.exe (FS9 9.1.0.40901). You can overwrite. To download it from my account that MEGA: https://mega.nz/#!uVsXALwA!RasqH23TAlgF ... 4iBBJWL4dw
3. Restart the computer.
4. Try to start the Flight Simulator 9

I hope it serves

Reiterating the cordial greetings

Hebert,

Thank you for the suggestion and offering your fs9.exe. However, I was still unable to get FS9 to load. I am already starting to get accustomed to Prepar3d V3 and think I will finally make the jump to Prepar3d.

Thanks for the help troubleshooting, gentlemen.
