Nope no ASE for me as of yet and I hope to keep it that way. I know that may sound weird but here's the full reasoning behind my position. At SkyWest KASE is a special qualification airport and that means that each crew member who flies to ASE has to get specialized training. The problem is that once ASE Qualified all you do is fly to ASE and my understanding from talking to those who do this flying is that it get's old very quick. Sure ASE is an awesome airport and place to overnight but the fact that you are pretty much stuck just doing the DEN to ASE shuttle would make me stay away from requesting to get ASE qualified. My understanding is that the company had to begin making junior pilots get qualified because the senior pilots who used to bid this flying got sick of it.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone :)

Cheers

Mike the city of St. George began construction on a new airport in 2009 and it opened the first week of January 2011. KDXZ is the new identifier. DXZ for Dixie; it's a big thing down that way. Anyhoo the community wanted to be able to draw larger capacity aircraft in the coming years as the community grows and the old airport couldn't handle aircraft much bigger than the Brasilia. So poof a new airport was born.

Flying into St. George now without the risk of going over the edge of the bluff just won't be the same :)

Cheers

Nope KSGU is closed and the land is going to be used for condo's. On the positive side you can now fly the controversial LDA appr :). According to rumor the engineers screwed up the RWY alignment by 3 degs making an ILS not possible at the new airport. It's all the talk right now and lot's of finger pointing going on. They also had to re-do the taxiway plans to have the required centerline distances to meet the new FAA guidelines. Luckily they caught this before laying pavement.

Anyway the old airport is now history.
