Mitch,
I've always used SquawkBox3 and then for FSX SquawkBox4 - Haven't touched FSINN... I used to run SB4 internally, but as you said, it does crash FSX, whether it's immediately or many minutes into your flight. Running it externally, ie - launched outside of FSX from your start menu as opposed to running it within from the FSX addons menu was the fix for that, and it did work for me. The problem for me was that I only run FSX fullscreen with a single monitor and every time I needed to access SB4 I had to minimize FSX and then restore FSX when I was done messing with SB4.
What worked wonderfully for me was running SB4 on my networked laptop via simconnect to FSX. Now I have SB4 up and running all the time on the laptop which sits next to me on my side desk and FSX on my main PC. Works great and no SquawkBox related FSX lockups to speak of.
You can download this .zip file from Avsim which contain all the directions and files you need to get started with this:

I will say it took some time for me to get the simconnect connection right between my laptop and desktop; but once it's established it's there for good. One thing, from experience and lost hair, that I can share with you is:
...Make sure you run the FSX SDK SP1 update from your Acceleration DVD (if you have it). On BOTH your FSX machine and SB4 machine. The versions HAVE to be the same. That was the main hangup for me... If you don't have acceleration I believe you can download the FSX SDK SP1 update from Microsoft (Just Google it
). Also there is a particular version of SP1 update depending on which version of FSX you are running, whether it be FSX SP1, Acceleration, etc. It's charted on Microsoft's site where you D/L from. Pay particular attention to this.
I hope this helps!
::EDIT:: - Rey, I am running FSX Acceleration on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.
