There once was a round-the-world group flight...
In old prop jobs. The "Retro Group Flight" I believe it was called... I don't think it ever made it all the way around. I was thinking of something not so ambitious but a little challenging nonetheless: A cross-country from the easternmost airport in the US (Eastport Municipal - KEPM) to the westernmost airport in the US (Casco Cove CGS - PAAT), in GA equipment, across the US (except for the hop to AK), equipment failures enabled, on VATSIM. Could be a Saturday afternoons gig or any other mutually agreeable time outside of normal business hours. I'm not thinking about credit for the flight time but that would be a nice bonus. Thoughts? Anyone interested?

A preliminary route survey broken down in about 100 or so mile chunks yields approximately 48 stops along the way. The second to last leg (PADK-PASY) is 344 miles simply because there is NOTHING in between those two fields except water. At 110 kts skyvector says it takes 3 hrs to complete. We can opt for high-performance GA stuff and cut that down a bit. In the old GFI we flew until we got tired and figured out a place to land. We could do that or pre-plan and schedule the whole route in advance. My plan was to pick an airplane and fly it for the duration.

Yes, we used the DC3 that had recently come with the latest FS version (FS9 I think). We did make it over to Europe (Italy if memory serves) and then I think I started getting busy with my flying lessons. The DC3 was a great AC for that endeavor....Christopher Dahlquist wrote:I remember that.
It was back in my first life in AAV. As I recall it was all DC-3 or something like that, and we started in California and worked our way East.
I think I made it unit l Louisiana or so before I drifted away.
I seem to remember Mr. Reince and Mr. Gemelli....who else?
Great idea Bert!!!

The spousal unit has spoken and prefers a Sunday evening schedule circa 6pm EST/2300z. I will start a thread with the weekly flight particulars for anyone who is interested and hope to see some folks there.

Re: There once was a round-the-world group flight...
That sounds interesting....count me in. I have some decent GA a/c, I'll have to get reacquaint with their performance to assure I pick the right one. Actually I will probably fly several different a/c during the journey.
By the way, The World Flight group just completed their yearly flight around the world raising funds for a charity. I flew several legs with them but didn't get a chance to fly as many as I wanted. They do it in Oct. or Nov. each year. I never remember to look for their routes and flight plans until it's late and they have already started.

You can count me in on this. Definitely the DC3, Sunday your time sounds good, that is Monday here. Now to do some maintenance on the old girl and see if the engines will start.
