Our new format and flying regs allow all pilots to use any AAL aircraft for flights. 2nd officers may fly aircraft which are in these categories; AA, Code Share, and Partner Equipment.
One should stick to the "letter of the Law" and use what aircraft are listed in the timetable for that flight. But, not everybody has all the aircraft and the sims do not either. You are correct when you say not to fly a 747 on a regional trip. But believe me there are new pilots who try to do that and file it on their reports. There is nothing written about aircraft substitution.
